SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to the climate provisions included in the Governor and State Legislature’s agreement.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, California Environmental Voters:

“These cuts to critical investments in clean energy, transportation and building electrification, and community and landscape resilience undercut our state’s ability to meet our carbon emissions reductions laws and to protect communities from pollution, extreme heat, drought, flood, and catastrophic fires. It’s baffling that our leaders didn’t take the opportunity to cut oil subsidies and other corporate handouts to preserve these investments and commitments.

We thank legislative leaders in the Assembly and Senate for holding the line and stopping the worst of the infrastructure budget trailer bill package from advancing. Let’s hope our leaders in Sacramento can still salvage climate action this year by mustering the courage to pass big policy change in the next few months. We can’t backslide or slow our progress while the climate crisis speeds up. We need our state leadership to do more, not less.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
