SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement on the end of Pro Tem Toni Atkins’ time as Senate President pro Tempore and Pro Tem Mike McGuire’s swearing in.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, California Environmental Voters:

As Senator Toni Atkins steps down as Pro Tem, we’re grateful for the major climate wins over the course of her leadership. After years of climate bills dying in the Senate, Pro Tem Emeritus Atkins secured major climate justice wins – like oil setbacks – and ensured that SB 253 made it through the Senate three times.

Senate President McGuire’s leadership on addressing catastrophic fires, offshore wind, marine conservation, and natural resources has been essential to California’s leadership on these issues. As Pro Tem, we look forward to him pushing the Senate to take on the big fights that will make a scalable difference to address climate and advance justice.

California is counting on our new Pro Tem to ensure that corporate polluters don’t hold our state back from the implementation and financing needed to deliver on the promise of our climate commitments. Pro Tem McGuire has exactly the track record of vision and leadership needed in this moment. The last two years have shown that when California’s leaders step up, we make big progress for the world.”

ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
