SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement on the Assembly Natural Resources Committee’s passage of the Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act (SB 253). Last year, the Assembly failed to pass SB 253 by just 1 vote despite corporate polluters’ massive efforts to defeat it. This year, corporate leaders, including Microsoft, Salesforce, REI Co-op, Patagonia, Ikea, and others have voiced their support of the bill that is critical to California’s national leadership in the fight against climate change.

Statement from Melissa Romero, Senior Legislative Manager, California Environmental Voters:

“SB 253 is unfinished business, and we’re looking to the Assembly to show climate courage as the bill makes its way to the floor. Today’s committee vote is just the beginning with our sponsored bill now headed to Assembly Appropriations before the deciding floor vote.

We can’t afford to push emissions transparency further down the road. Corporate accountability and leadership are crucial pillars of our climate action agenda and broader approach to drastically reduce emissions that fuel the intense wildfires and extreme heat already impacting Californians. We’re seeing major corporations step up to the plate, and we need Assembly leadership to do the same.

As the fourth largest economy in the world, this is an opportunity for California to once again lead the way on climate action. We have no choice but to protect the air we breathe.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
